Like most girls born between 1980 and 1992, I was a huge Babysitter's Club fan growing up. I even once wrote a letter to Ann M. Martin telling her that she was my favorite author. (She wrote back and sent me an autographed picture -- you know you're a little bit jealous.) Also, the OCD side of me really loved the matching, pastel-toned covers with the baby-blocked title letters. They just looked great lined up on a book shelf. Clearly, I was crazy even then.

Welcome to the big show, ladies. |
Claudia was my favorite, since I fancied myself somewhat of an artist. Plus, even at a young age, I envied a woman who was able to eat that much candy without getting fat. I liked Kristy as well, but only because I went through a phase where I really wanted older brothers. Plus, Claudia had that learning disability, that smart-ass older sister and thought that her parent's lied to her about being adopted for awhile and that all seemed like kind of a bummer. And Kristy had that rich stepfather, which is pretty great.
The one thing that really annoyed me about the Babysitter's Club series was that they were always in eighth grade, or sixth grade in the case of Mallory and Jessi. Year after year, summer after summer, the gang cycled back into their respective grades. (Perhaps Claudia wasn't the only one with the learning disability?) I always hoped that at some point Ann would allow the girls to grow up and we'd get some juicier story lines, like Mary Anne and Logan having sex or Stacey getting knocked up by one of the dads. You know, something more along the lines of Judy Blume. Well, as far as I know, Ann never did that. Luckily Emily Weiss did.
Here's her hilarious take on where the gang (now 37 years old) ended up.
Oh, and obviously, the members of the Babysitter's Club are in my wolfpack.

My faves were Dawn and Stacey...probably because I was really a Marianne.
ReplyDeleteMy fave was Marianne, but I think that was only because of the whole Logan triangle. I loved that.
ReplyDeleteMy fave was Stacey, not her sugar issues, but her "boy craziness" and love for fashion and makeup, surprise surprise! I liked Claudia too, and Kristy's entrepreneurial spirit. I liked the BSC so much that I started my own babysitting and mother's helper service in my neighborhood. I wanted to "make it rain" so I could have my own pizza parties.
ReplyDeleteBre, I'm pretty sure that you just became my hero. I always wanted my own BSC!
