Correspondence: I'm lost without you

Dear Chuck Bass,

Only 4 weeks until your fate is decided.

Until then,

Lovecats: Blair and Chuck

Have you guys been watching Gossip Girl?

You know I love her--xoxo--but I have not been enjoying the continued separation of Chuck and Blair. If there were ever two lovecats that deserved a break, it was these two scheming upper-east-siders. For reals.

I fully recognize that in order to keep the plot interesting, suspenseful and compelling, they need to present our beloved manipulators with challenges to their relationship.  I fully recognize that if Chuck and Blair were too happy for too long, I might get bored.

Might.

Maybe.  Possibly.  Probably.  Not.

But you know what else makes a plot boring?  Babies.

Yep.  I said it.  Ha.

Don't get me wrong:  like many 27+2 year olds, I am baby obsessed--and that is putting it mildly.  I have tried to kidnap my friend's children.  Literally.  And it didn't go over well, I'm afraid.

But when young characters on escapist teen dramas have babies, it never goes well. They become mothers with real problems (ie Andrea Zuckerman and Haley James Scott).  And we don't watch GG for insight into real problems.  I want Blair to sport the newest dress from Victoria Beckham's new line...not a breast pump.

How do you think Blair will deal with this transition?  What do you think the writers have planned? What are your predictions for the couple?

Monday without Chuck Bass might as well be Tuesday.

Gossip Girl has had a roller coaster season four so far, with great highs (Chuck and Blair, Eminem featured in two episodes, sex on the piano) and very low lows (the introduction of Eva, anything that involved Lily, the fact that Taylor Momsen is still in the credits) but with the show on hiatus until mid-April, I find myself with some time on my hands this Monday night.

Since the second best thing about Gossip Girl -- after Mr. Charles Bass -- is the fashion, I thought I'd relive with you some of my favorite Blair and Serena outfits from the fourth season so far.

Blair
(1) The very first episode of the season and Blair knocked one out of the park with this gorgeous print from Moschino Resort FTW.  Usually I would find a print like this too busy -- especially with the Chanel bag -- but the cut of this dress was so flirty and fun, I just totally love it.  Also, I really want to be able to wear a hat on the back of my head like that.  It always falls off my head when I do that; what's the secret?  (2) This asymmetrical J. Mendel is sophiticated and interesting and I love the sash.  (3) I'm obsessed with polka dots, and I love the midcentury siloette.  Very Mad Men.  Bensoni's one shouldered take on this classic is fresh and fabulous.  (4) It's short.  It's sparky. It's Valentino.  It's nine grand. (5) I feel like nude has been everywhere this year, which makes me jealous because I totally can't wear it, but I love Victoria Beckman's day-to-night version here.

Serena
Usually I consider myself a Blair Waldorf girl through-and-through.  I'm brunette.  I'm preppy.  I'm sort of a bitch.  It just fits.  But this year I've been obsessed with a few of Serena's outfits.  These three in particular just stuck with me.
(1) This Stella McCartney sequin dress is fantastic on it's own, and I absolutely love it with the fitted blazer and Lanvin cut out pumps.  I like to imagine that this is what I look like when I'm hanging around in Boston, but I'm pretty sure I actually look like this.  Just kidding -- but that is what you get when you Google "boston lady."  (2) This Kaufman Franco halter dress is absolutely phenomenal.  That's it.  Perfect cut, perfect color, perfect sparkle.  Also, scarves are the ultimate accessory.  Serena knows this and so should you.  (3) This was the episode that Serena wore that dramatic Jenny Packham black and white gown, which was breath-taking and got a lot of attention, but I really fell in love with this Diane Von Furstenberg. It's slightly more practical.  (But only slightly, since it's a DVF and I work in non-profit.)  Oh and, for the record, DVF forever.

And no matter the season, or the day of the week, there's one Gossip guy who always looks great.
Those are my favorites of season four so far.  Let's hope Manhattan's elite continue to deliver when they finally come back next month.

In Memoriam...

I have horrible news.

Chuck Bass is dead.

No, not that Chuck Bass.  My fish, Chuck Bass, has taken the long journey to fish heaven.  He was a great pet, and a better friend.  He will be sorely missed at the Chambers. (Also, known as my apartment.)  My favorite thing about Chuck is when he would come right over to the glass and make fishy faces at me while I fed him.  I mean, the logical part of me knows that he was just looking at his own reflection but it really felt like we were connecting.  I guess I'll always have my memories.

Chuck in better days...
I know that some of you are going to take this news hard.  Please know that Chuck was properly honored with a sea burial.  And take solace, like I do, in knowing that Chuck is in a better place.  At times like this I find comfort in the immortal words of the late Tupac Shakur:

Ain't no place I'd rather be, chillin' with homies and family
in a sky-high iced-out paradise in the sky
Ain't no place I'd rather be, only place that's right for me
chromed-out mansion in paradise, in the sky

Here's to you, Chuck Bass, I hope your chromed-out mansion in paradise is all you ever dreamed.

Heartbreak...and Recovery

In light of Danielle's inspiring message about turning sadness into awesomeness, I've decided to pick myself up off my living room floor, dry my tears, clean up all the things I broke in a rage last night and concentrate on all the things that make life just a little more awesome.  Here's a few...

On Fridays, when Us Weekly comes and I get to learn all the reasons stars are just like us (Their dogs go poo!  They eat food!), and decide for myself who wore it best.

The new Britney song, which I'm proud to love.  Don't hold it against me.

Vacation planning.  I'm currently planning my annual spring weekend with my BFF.  So many choices, so much fun.

Those three-pairs for $4.99 earrings at Target, they are totally made for someone like me who loses earrings constantly.

Chuck Bass is a real lady killer.
Jalapeño infused tequila.  I had it for the first time on Saturday night, and it was a spicy delight.  Much like me.  Wink.

My fish, Chuck Bass.  Much like the warm-blooded Chuck Bass, the aquatic version is flashy, aloof and a big snob.  He also has a flair for the dramatic. He can hold REALLY still. For a REALLY long time.  I'm not going to lie to you, it can be pretty disconcerting at times.  But it makes especially awesome when he starts swimming around again.

Hats.  I love them, and despite having an unusually large head, I can mostly pull them off.  Assuming I can find ones that can fit on my huge noggin.

Those alcohol wipes at the gym.  So much better than that towels and spray bottles.

Shows that you can watch over and over and never get sick of.  I think there's a comfort in knowing exactly what is going to happen, but still enjoying watching the stories unfold.  For me, it's Friends and The West Wing.  In the words of Depeche Mode, I just can't get enough.

People who get things done.  You know those kinds of people who are smart, competent, efficient and self-directed and just get it done?  I want to be just like them when I grow up.

Awards season has officially begun -- which means lots and lots of vapid judging and fashion spreads.

Good looking guys, great looking city.
Movies that feature Boston.  My favorites are Good Will Hunting and The Departed, but I'll pretty much watch anything set in my favorite city.  Sometimes I even watch the fifth and sixth seasons of Dawson's Creek for the aerial panoramas and Boston-based exterior shots.  And definitely not for the plots or because I love Pacey or anything.  Cuz that would be weird...  Anyway, I especially love when non-Bostonian actors can do great non-rhotic Boston accents.  Jeremy Renner in The Town and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed are great examples.  Martin Sheen in The Departed is not a great example.

These are just a few of the things that are making life awesome now, instead of tragic.

I'm Chuck Bass

Blah...it is Monday night. I've survived the first Monday back to work after a 10-day luxurious holiday break. I maintained resolution and hit up Monday's spin class. And now I'm looking forward to the best part of Monday--Gossip Girl...

(Record Scratch)

...but its still on winter hiatus and the CW is showing a repeat. Ew.

Dear CW,
If you are going to air a repeat, at least have the creativity to choose a vintage GG episode...like before Vanessa was a real character. And when Jenny still had real hair.
Love, Dfest

Anywayyyyyy, while I can't get my weekly GG fix tonight, I do have 2 pieces of good news.

One: Gossip Girl returns on January 24th--which according to "experts" and "calculations" will be the most depressing day of 2011, also known as "Blue Monday." While Blue Monday doesn't come with all of the shopping deals that accompany "Black Friday", at least we will have something to look forward to that night on the Upper East Side.

Two: Chuck Bass is in my wolfpack, and this post is dedicated to him.
Yes, I realize Chuck can be quite the player. And he can't always express his feelings. And he's just a little tragic. But I'm not suggesting we nominate him as the next Bachelor. I'm merely making the case that such a character should run in our wolfpack--if he were a real person, that is.

And so, without further ado, I give you the top five reasons Charles Bartholomew "Chuck" Bass is wolfpack material:

1. He has seemingly infinite resources.

2. He is not afraid of making bold fashion choices, including argyle, bow-ties and the color pink.

3. He is badass and cunning and ruthless with enemies, but fiercly loyal to friends and family.

4. He is Chuck Bass.

5. And I think this just sums it all up: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpWMF_01eP8

Thoughts on Chuck Bass? On other CW characters? On the merits of argyle? On Jenny's terrible hair extensions?

xoxo
